Game Design with ILIAS - Level
Mission-based levels
mission-based levels
In missions, learners work to create conditions that are a prerequisite for moving forward. Such missions can simulate conditions that occur in the real world. For example, a mission may be to determine a specific code without which a door cannot be opened or to find a material needed to conduct an experiment.
Scenarios in which something like this lends itself are:
- complex courses in which learning steps can be identified (the acquisition of certain competencies precedes the acquisition of other competencies)
- learning environments in which a great deal of content builds on each other (e.g.: a method must be learned before it can be applied)
- the simulation of the necessity of certain frameworks
With the temporal availability settings you can ensure that temporal factors for missions can also be experienced in the learning environment. For example, provide information about plants only during the time when the plant could be found outside, or images from telescopes that could only be taken at a certain time of day. This information could be in a folder available for a limited time, for example.
Working with preconditions makes it easier to imitate mission-based game levels. One can set certain ILIAS objects to become visible and/or editable only after preconditions are met. For example, the correct entry of a code could be in a numerical question in a test, which in turn must be passed in order to advance to another location.
learning objectives-driven course
The course view "learning objective-driven course" can be used to map different missions. Learning objectives cannot be integrated into the page editor, so they cannot be controlled by preconditions or temporal availability. However, they can be manually turned on and off, which would result in an increased moderation effort if missions are to be successively available in the form of learning objectives.
In short, if visual feedback on learning progress via barometer is not required for the scenario, it is more advisable to map missions using the page editor and availability.
